Paediatric Unit
Our Paediatric team consists of Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists and Occupational Therapists who follow an interdisciplinary treatment approach and often combine therapies for maximum benefit. The unit specializes in treating patients with acquired neurological conditions including Near Drowning resulting in anoxic brain damage; traumatic brain injuries, Guillain Barre Syndrome, spinal cord injury , brain tumor and poly trauma.
A comprehensive assessment resulting in an individualised treatment plan is developed for each child. This may include the following:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Group therapy sessions
- Outings
- Home and school visits where appropriate
- A dark room, for sensory input and modulation
- An NDT and sensory approach is taken to maximize each child’s potential
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
- The Speech Therapists are trained and experienced in the treatment of paediatric dysphagia and use Vitalstim in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy when appropriate
- Aquatherapy when appropriate
- Carer and family training
- Prescription of appropriate assistive devices and mobility equipment
