The warm, sunny environment of the eight bed Paediatric Ward at Netcare Rehab hospital welcomes you the minute you step through its doors. It’s only surpassed by the warmth of the people waiting to treat and love your child. A distinctly interdisciplinary treatment approach is taken with the physiotherapist, speech and occupational therapist often combining therapies for maximal benefit.
- An NDT and sensory approach is taken to maximize each child’s potential.
- Another exciting approach that has been added is the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). This enables children who cannot talk to communicate.
- The speech therapists are trained and experienced in the treatment of paediatric dysphagia and use Vitalstim in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy when appropriate.
- A specific treatment room and a dark room, for sensory input and modulation, are attached to the ward and new toys and treatment tools are regularly added to it.
The unit is located on the first floor of the rehab hospital behind a coded security door to ensure your child’s safety during their stay with us. The unit specializes in acquired neurological conditions including, among others: Near drowning resulting in anoxic brain damage; traumatic brain injuries, Guillain Barre Syndrome, spinal cord injury , brain tumor and poly trauma.
