Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinic
The AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) clinic is a clinic where patients who are non-verbal or have limited verbal communication are assessed according to their needs, abilities and
resources, with the purpose of finding an appropriate means of communication. AAC can also be used to improve accessibility for patients with limited hand function / mobility to electronic equipment like a computer through using for example: a joy stick or a head mouse. AAC systems can improve people’s social interaction and therefore improve their quality of life.
An AAC system is chosen according to the patient’s level of functioning, motivation and recourses available to the specific patient. Since our main focus is rehabilitation of our patients, the AAC system will be used functionally in therapy and the patient and his/her family will be trained to use his new method of communication / accessibility in all possible communication settings, e.g. Workplace, social, domestic, etc. AAC is currently implemented as the demand arises and when appropriate for specific patients by the treating speech therapist. When appropriate to the patient, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are involved in positioning and hand function for the accessibility of the device/ system appropriate.
